About This Cause
Critical Support (formerly named Critical NHS) launched in March 2020 as a spontaneous, wholly voluntary effort to bring food to NHS frontline workers during the COVID-19 lockdown. Now a registered charity - Critical Support has turned its focus on re-distributing surplus food, dry stores, toiletries, feminine hygiene products and other vital supplies to impoverished families in SW London. They currentl support 14 local community groups, and together they reach over 3000 needy people each week. To date Critical Support have • Diverted over 270 tonnes of surplus food since launch • Supplied the equivalent of 519,887 meals since launch With the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Critical Support worked alongside the White Eagle Club to offer a base from which over 1000 tonnes of aid was shipped via Poland to the Ukraine in the first three weeks of the war. In July 2022 they opened a large 13-bed property in Clapham, and working with Lambeth Council, they have so far helped 26 families fleeing the war, come to the UK. Offering accommodation, signposting to local services and support networks, English language lessons and enrolment to primary and secondary schools, Critical Support have been heralded by Lambeth Council as a shining example of what is possible and received heartfelt thanks from the Embassy of Ukraine. Their latest focus is to support Violence Against Women & Girls, and they plan to work with Wandsworth Council to provide a safe-place to come where women fleeing domestic violence can come select clothing, toiletries, linen and baby supplies in a quiet and safe environment, together with counselling and self-defence classes.
