Mission Statement
To enable our community to access and learn about the therapeutic benefits of gardening and nature within a haven that provides nourishment for the mind, body and soul.
About This Cause
Nature’s Haven's vision is to make everyone feel valued and part of the community. Our raison d’être is to connect and include and that goes way beyond gender, culture and race. We are creating a community healing garden in the heart of Maidenhead offering a safe space in which to connect and help people with their well being, whether that is physical and/or mental health challenges and loneliness. The garden is restorative and yet enabling too, allowing the visitor to 'simply be', reflect & be fully present in the moment and/or actively engage in gardening through our social therapeutic horticultural programmes. Nature's Haven is filled with a variety of plants that promote a sense of well being and hope. Our garden design is based on the principles of a physic garden, focusing on the plants' inherent healing properties. It is a place of refuge where healing, distraction and stress relief is promoted. Nature's Haven has created, maintains & continues to develop our healing garden to generate an abundance of positivity. The garden is a feast for the senses with sound, colour, fragrance, movement, texture and taste. The beds and borders are a mix flowers, herbs fruit and vegetables, focusing on heritage and disease resistant varieties. The garden design include a series of defined outdoor spaces, with fire pit and water feature to encourage as much biodiversity as possible and aid contemplation. We champion sustainability and we are guided by permaculture principles thus avoiding synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. We also have two bug hotels and nest boxes. The garden is designed with accessibility in mind. Wheelchairs are able to access all areas of the garden with raised beds, wheelchair ramps and accessible toilets . We also have adapted tools to assist with any mobility issues. We are volunteer led and have a core group of regular volunteers, as well as holding corporate volunteering days. We work with a number of partner organisations and social-prescribers to provide events and opportunities to engage as many people in our community as possible such as: volunteering, regular community events/gatherings and workshops such as our ‘Sow, Grow, Eat, Repeat...programme’ and wreath making workshops. We also work with the Berkshire College of Agriculture neuro diverse adult learners, giving them an opportunity to boost their social skills, confidence and learn new skills with the hope they may be able to enter into paid employment. We run corporate volunteering days with aim of providing our corporate volunteers with a fun and rewarding day in the fresh air, with the opportunity to work hands-on in our beautiful garden. Our approach is person centred, fun and friendly. You learn about Nature’s Haven and see with your own eyes the great work we do within our community. During our corporate volunteering days, you would get to experience a great team-building opportunity, whilst supporting your local community group and making a positive difference to the lives of people living with disabilities, wellness and health issues. Your team would also get to explore the many benefits of gardening and its effects on well-being and mental health. What volunteering gives you: A truly active way to show how your organisation plays a positive and responsible part in helping your local community. A day in our healing garden gives your employees opportunities to work collaboratively in a setting outside of the home office or main office; building new relationships and understandings. We are happy for you to share the results publicly for any PR purposes. Crucially, no previous experience is required. All sessions are supervised, with a health and safety briefing given before you get stuck in. We make sure everyone is fully involved with either some of the more heavy-duty tasks such as clearing borders and building raised beds or more peaceful activities such as planting or weeding. Whatever tasks you get involved in; our primary aim is that you have fun in a positive environment. Hopefully our healing garden will help soothe you as well and you come away with some great ideas for your own garden, balcony or windowsill. We end the day with a good old cuppa and a slice of cake. Your help is invaluable. The work carried out by our CSR groups makes a huge difference to Nature’s Haven, as there are many jobs that are just too time consuming or complex for our volunteer gardeners to carry out. There are no charges for our Corporate Volunteering days. All we ask is that you bring your own lunch and refreshments, gardening gloves, wear sturdy shoes and weather appropriate clothes. If your organisation would like to make a donation so that we can continue to provide our services to the community you do so by either: Monetary donation – we are signed up to Benevity, a platform that is an easy and effective way to facilitate corporate giving. Equipment – we always need more spades, forks, trowels, compost, seeds etc. Services – marketing, events etc.
