Mission Statement
Real Motherhood, Real Conversation. We Are Motherly Love CIC is mental health maintenance for all mothers and birthing people. We believe that no mother should struggle through parenting alone. Motherly Love creates safe and non-judgmental spaces where mothers can explore the emotions and feelings triggered by pregnancy, birth and beyond. By fostering compassion and creating authentic connections, our hope is our mums will journey through parenthood feeling heard, validated and supported. Our goals include: - To prepare pregnant mothers for the emotional impact of having a baby in a supportive and realistic way, which empowers them to advocate for themselves and parent their way - To help those struggling with their mental health to feel heard, validated, and supported - To build a community where mothers can connect with each other and create their own ‘village’ - To support mothers no matter the age of the child/ren - through pregnancy, birth and beyond - To work with mothers to find a compassionate voice, an inner confidence, and a sense of self-worth and value - To provide specialist support for mothers navigating challenging transitions in their parenting journey, such as the return to work - To work in collaboration with other mental health and wellbeing organisations, signposting mothers to wider support and resources and assisting with referrals
About This Cause
We Are Motherly Love CIC has been serving our local community in East London since 2019 and was born out of our founder Milli's mental health crisis following the birth of her second child. Unable to attend regular baby classes due to high levels of anxiety, Milli created a weekly coffee morning for any mums struggling with their mental health locally. Gemma joined in September 2022 after her own experience with PND and anxiety, and the company officially became a CIC in December that year. Fast forward to today, we have supported over 200 mothers who were looking for emotional support. This ranges from those looking to find a safe space to talk with others who get it, right through to those needing to access Perinatal Mental Health Services and Mother & Baby units. Facilitated by a BACP Counsellor & Psychotherapist and a former NHS Specialist Peer Support Worker, our free groups offer a unique blend of peer support and group therapy, where those attending crucially feel seen, heard and validated in their experiences. For those needing more intensive treatment, the groups often provide much-need bridging support to those waiting to access NHS services and tend to continue to run alongside and complement NHS therapeutic support. Our model prides itself on being mother-centred, which means there is no weekly commitment, rather we're here when the mother needs us. We welcome mothers and their babies any time during the session to remove the stress of arriving on time. We provide a free hot drink and a non-judgmental space to talk freely, if that feels comfortable. There are toys for the babies, space for prams and changing facilities. Typically, our most mothers regularly attend throughout their maternity leave until their return to work, and it is a privilege to accompany throughout their parenting journey through this time. However, over the five years of supporting mothers, we recognise that the majority of mums we meet are blindsided by the emotional impact of having a baby. There is a dangerous lack of antenatal mental health education in our culture and this needs radical reform. In November 2024, we launched a pilot offering 4 weeks of antenatal emotional well-being support to 10 expectant mothers, and we are continuing to offer monthly check-ins six months post birth. Plus, we have recently launched a survey to get a better idea of the landscape and collect vital data, that will allow us to campaign for lasting and meaningful change to the mental health of mothers UK wide.
