Mission Statement
Pattern Gym's mission is to provide free Personal Training and access to gyms to young people at risk of criminal exploitation in London.
About This Cause
Pattern Gym CIC is an organisation that was established in May 2023. It was founded by Carly and Hannah who at the time were both working as part of the Context Intervention Unit in Hackney Council, a unit which focussed on engaging young people at risk of harm outside the home, led by the framework of Contextual Safeguarding. Sadly, this unit’s funding was not continued, but as part of the project, Carly and Hannah had engaged a vulnerable peer group by establishing regular gym sessions at the local Britannia Leisure Centre. This idea had come directly from the young people, who highlighted that access to this new leisure facility was something they would like and felt they would benefit from. Carly, a senior social worker, was also a qualified Personal Trainer, and with the support of Hannah, a youth worker and qualified psychodynamic counsellor, the benefit of these regular gym sessions became clear. When the unit lost it’s funding, Carly and Hannah were not willing to let the sessions end and so Pattern Gym CIC was born. The aim of this organisation is to engage young people vulnerable to criminal exploitation in a fun, non-confronting way, where their physical health and strength is at the forefront. However, as we know, the impact of improved physical health and fitness is far wider. Young people’s self-esteem is improved, motivation and focus improves and their openness to conversations about wider support follow. Pattern Gym CIC is able to also support with access to education and employment, guidance on nutrition and sleep as well as building positive relationships in the community and enabling the young people to feel safe and welcome in community spaces.
