Mission Statement

Invigor8 North East Community Interest Company is dedicated to the enhancement and betterment of our communities by offering safe spaces where events and activities take place to encourage community cohesion amongst people from all ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds, improve the standards of their local environment, mental wellbeing and physical health to promote engagement and assist with their growth into contributing members of society. With the assistance of local community groups, businesses, sports clubs and groups and by working in partnership with Valley Road Academy, we will endeavour to make Hendon a more desirable place to live. We will strive for excellence in all aspects of our business with the aim of inspiring young and old alike to make positive impacts on their community and the City of Sunderland.

About This Cause

Invigor8 North East CIC Ltd is a new Community Interest Company registered in October 2023. The company was created to transform and develop an underutilised and neglected site into a pleasant, green outdoor space and thriving community and sports hub. Our aim is to bring together people from all ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds by giving them opportunities to participate in a variety of activities and events that will be designed to improve their social skills, physical health and mental wellbeing. Hendon, the area in which the business will operate faces many social challenges. With a population of just under 11,500 people, it has the highest rate of unemployment in the Sunderland area, currently standing at just over 40%. High unemployment and social deprivation has seen a rapid increase in the number of people suffering with mental and physical health problems. Although statistics suggest that the area has seen a decrease in crime, it still poses a challenge to the many organisations and charities in the area who work extremely hard to offer opportunities to those who have become disenfranchised and look to survive financially through criminal activity. We will work closely with local organisations, such as Valley Road Academy, Back on the Map, Sunderland Voluntary Sector Alliance, Raich Carter Sports Centre and other local primary schools by providing services and activities in a sizeable outdoor space. This will help to underpin their similar ambitions for continuous improvement of the Hendon area. We aim to fill the gaps in their respective timetables by offering ‘something new’ to increase inclusivity and participation for all ethnic and social groups. The core aspect of the project is to provide a permanent home for all of the junior and senior teams within Sunderland City Juniors FC, alongside their weekly starter and disability sessions. The income which can be generated from pitch hire fees and associated contributions from the football club will contribute to our ongoing development plans and enable us to add value to local schools by aiding their curriculum and local organisations for further improvement of their services. The idea for this project started when we came across a social media article about local ward councillor, Michael Mordey and his efforts in securing funding for a new AstroTurf pitch at the Raich Carter Centre in Hendon, which neighbours the site at Valley Road Academy. In our view, development of the Valley Road Academy pitch and grounds would complement the facilities at the Raich Carter Sports Centre. All of the Directors of Invigor8 North East Community Interest Company have a vested interest in grassroots sport, due to our children’s participation (past and present) as well as a passion for community betterment, positive outcomes for and the inclusion of our young people and contributing towards further regeneration in Sunderland.
