Mission Statement

World Horse Welfare is a leading international charity, established in 1927, that improves the lives of horses worldwide through education, campaigns and hands-on care. Our vision is a world where every horse is treated with respect, compassion and understanding and we aim to achieve this by working directly with horses, horse owners, communities, organisations, sport regulators and governments. At the heart of our work are our values which are to be compassionate and supportive, realistic in our approach, focusing on practical solutions, and forward-thinking in anticipating challenges and change; always seeking innovative ways of being effective. Our President is HRH The Princess Royal who is an active supporter of the charity’s work.

About This Cause

The charity was founded upon campaigner Ada Cole’s mission to end the long-distance transportation of horses to slaughter almost 90 years ago. Our founder’s practical approach and endeavour to deliver lasting change still drives the charity to stop the suffering of horses worldwide. Today we rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses in the UK, as well as work overseas with 10 community training programmes currently active on three continents. World Horse Welfare recognises the importance of the horse-human partnership and the role of the horse across the many cultures of the world. We strive to protect the welfare of all horses and empower those who care for them to do the same. UK WELFARE World Horse Welfare rescue and rehabilitate neglected, abandoned and abused horses and operate the largest rehoming organisation of its type in the UK. We have a network of 16 dedicated Field Officers who provide a front-line response to thousands of welfare concerns reported by the public through our welfare hotline and provide a vital education service to help prevent welfare cases developing. In circumstances where horses are deemed to be under immediate threat, World Horse Welfare will remove the horses and bring them to one of our four Rescue and Rehoming centres located in Norfolk, Somerset, Lancashire and Aberdeenshire, which accommodate around 350 horses at any one time. The rescued horses will receive the care and veterinary treatment they so desperately need and undergo a programme of careful rehabilitation, which aims to restore their health and prepare them to be rehomed to a caring new home either as a ridden horse or a companion. We have faced an unprecedented demand on our resources in recent years and the rehoming scheme is a key component of the charity’s work with an average of 250 horses rehomed each year, enabling us to take in new, urgent cases. All rehomed horses remain under ownership of the charity and this is an important safeguard for both horse and rehomer, should circumstances change in the future. INTERNATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMMES The charity works in some of the world’s poorest regions in Africa, Asia and Latin America, through 10 community-based education and skills training programmes. The training programmes build horse care knowledge and skills in communities that rely on working equids (horses, ponies donkeys and mules) to support their livelihoods. Our holistic approach engages the whole community, develops local partner organisations and links with veterinary universities, and trains local service providers in farriery, saddlery and horse care. Our objective is to help as many horses as possible and to ensure improvements are sustainable. Last year we were able to directly help over 13,000 working horses and our international team monitor every project closely so we can analyse the direct impact on horse welfare as well as the benefits to the community. CAMPAIGNS We conduct campaigns and educational initiatives spanning a wide variety of issues that impact horse health and welfare, including the root causes of welfare problems such as delayed euthanasia, weight management, responsible breeding and disease, as well as shaping laws that affect horses. The success of our founding campaign to end the export of British horses to slaughter abroad has led to on-going work to reduce the number of horses still suffering on journeys in Europe. Gathering information on field investigations and producing scientific evidence has contributed significantly to the recognition of our campaign. Keeping our evidence up to date and maintaining pressure on those with the power to influence legislation with our clear and powerful information pushes our campaign forward to end the long-distance transportation of horses to slaughter across Europe. HORSE WELFARE IN SPORT We work constructively with horse sport regulators and are unique in our approach to promote the responsible use of horses in sport. We are independent welfare advisors to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). We helped to draft the FEI’s welfare Code of Conduct and have a constructive role in influencing policy to maintain high standards of horse welfare. In 2011 we also helped to shape Aintree’s review of the Grand National and the BHA’s whip review. CHARITY FUNDING The charity does not receive any state or lottery funding and is funded entirely through voluntary donations by individuals, trusts and corporate partnerships.
