Mission Statement

Variety, the Children's Charity helps transform the lives of children and young people across the UK who are disabled or disadvantaged by ill health or poverty.

About This Cause

When statutory funding cannot adequately meet a child's needs, Variety steps in. We support families as well as schools, hospitals, hospices, community groups and children’s organisations by providing: Wheelchair Grants: Having the right wheelchair can make all the difference by increasing independence, improving medical outcomes or just making it possible to have an ordinary childhood and achieve their full potential. A wheelchair that raises a child to the eye level of their friends transforms how they can socialise and develop relationships. Specially adapted sports wheelchairs make sport accessible for all and some of the children we have supported have gone on to win medals in the Paralympics for Team GB. Specialist Equipment Grants: Variety provides practical, tailored solutions by funding assistive technology such as in-home hoists and orthopaedic furniture, diabetes monitors and sensory equipment for children. Whilst the equipment may be child-specific, parents, carers and siblings benefit too as challenges faced by families with a child with a disability are removed or reduced. Accessible transportation provided by Sunshine Coaches: Specially adapted accessible transport for children who have additional needs or are growing up in poverty, making it possible for groups of children to enjoy trips out to places they otherwise couldn’t get to. The benefits to children with disabilities are clear in terms of making the world a more accessible place. For disabled children travel can be challenging, exhausting and expensive. Our Sunshine Coaches remove those barriers. There are mainstream schools in some of the most deprived areas of the UK who use their Sunshine Coaches for way more than just taking children out on school trips and educational visits. They are used out of school hours to bring some of the most vulnerable children to school and for whole families to go on outings that they would otherwise be unable to do. Memorable Experiences through our Variety Great Days Out: Variety offers a range of events for children to have fun in ways that their families can’t provide. Our Great Days Out give these children the opportunity to meet other children from different backgrounds to support their social development, communication skills and confidence. Days out range from sightseeing tours, zoo trips, days out at the beach, cinema screenings, theme parks, circuses and theatre shows and specially designed inclusive parties. Projects that transform the facilities of SEND schools: Best illustrated by an example, Variety has built an all-inclusive, interactive and sensory-stimulating outdoor playground with an indoor sensory room and rebound therapy room for a SEND school in Harrogate. The new facility is suitable for the needs of their 80+ students with multiple and profound, learning and/or physical disabilities. When we first visited the school the play facilities were extremely limited but now the school has been transformed beyond all recognition.
