Mission Statement

Based in London SE1 since 1887,we provide a range of services to support people in the local community Creating Opportunities Together

About This Cause

Blackfriars Settlement (BFS) was founded in 1887 to support ‘equalisation’ for the poorest residents of Southwark. This rich history of community service and representation is grounded in over a century of commitment to practical, inclusive, and compassionate social justice for local communities facing inequalities. In 2018, BFS merged with the Mary Ward Settlement (MWS), a leader in adult learning and legal support, creating an alliance committed to inclusivity and opportunity for local people. Whilst we are separately constituted charities, our combined vision and mission is grounded in a commitment to creating a fairer, more inclusive society through education, representation, and community action. Together, we envision a society where everyone can achieve their aspirations, overcome obstacles, and find a sense of belonging and support.  Our shared mission is to enhance physical and mental well-being, foster lifelong learning, and strengthen community connections, within inclusive and welcoming places where everyone feels like they belong. We deliver community services for over 60's , people with mental health needs and support adult learning for people over the age of 18. We deliver a range of services including feeding people to overcome food insecurity and to being people together, arts and creative services and physical wellbeing.
