Mission Statement
As a church and charity, we seek to engage in long term, relational and innovative work which seeks to contribute to the personal, spiritual and social transformation and well-being of people living and working in Tower Hamlets, East London. We aim to support and empower people living in challenging and difficult circumstances to reach their full potential. Oak London aims to provide a residential course for young men aged 18 and above at risk of prison who have a desire for a change in the direction of their life. It exists to fight gang culture in London, promote reconciliation and reconnection within communities, ultimately seeing young men choose to leave lives of crime.
About This Cause
Oak London aims to provide a residential course for young men aged 18 and above at risk of prison who have a desire for a change in the direction of their life. It will launch in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, a time when gang and crime involvement has increased due to lack of opportunity, and face to face intervention is needed more than ever. Oak London exists to fight gang culture in London, promote reconciliation and reconnection within communities and see young men choose to leave lives of crime. Oak London believes that addressing trauma and hardship can best take place within a loving community in which people feel safe, trusted and able to trust. Young men want vision and purpose, to feel supported and know that people are for them, and from this place they are enabled to change. Prevention is always favourable to alleviation. Self-respect and positive choices come from a place of agency and life value, rather than conformity to a system. Change has to come as a result of their agency if it is to be deep rooted and sustainable. Oak London has developed through work with vulnerable young people in London across schools, PRUs and youth work environments, similar projects overseas, and people with first-hand experience of leaving crime behind. It seeks to be part of a public health approach to youth crime and violence and partner with, and be a resource for, other like-minded projects and services. A public health approach to crime and violence ‘suggests that policy makers should search for a 'cure' by using scientific evidence to identify what causes the issue and find interventions that work to prevent it spreading’ . It recognises that services and grass roots charities are best positioned to offer interventions to potentially vulnerable or exploited young people when acting together. Oak London bridges the gap between people involved in crime and initiatives that support them to find beneficial employment. The project is modelled on uMthombo, South Africa and is centred around a rehabilitative residential programme. Participants will attend a residential course based outside of London at Trinity College Bristol. This removes them from the distractions of their normal surrounding allowing for a significant opportunity for reflection. During the pilots the residential will be 1 week, increasing to 3 weeks when the full course takes off. The course includes: • Community living where attendees live, cook and eat together • Daily sessions based around the 12 step programme • ‘Learning together’ style lectures with Trinity College • Opportunities for sports involvement Recognising that the residential course is the initial springboard it will be followed up with 3 elements: • 6 ‘transitory’ weekly workshops at Bethnal Green Mission Church which underpin the routines and learnings from the residential course, helping participants transfer this learning into their everyday lives. • a community project, re-engaging the attendees with their local communities in a positive capacity • a mentoring relationship for 12 months as they move onto their next steps. The project aims to develop and instil a sense of worth and purpose in the young men, bringing significant and sustained transformation to not only their lives but communities too.
