Mission Statement
BlindAid's Mission: As London’s oldest charity for blind and visually impaired people, BlindAid works to improve quality of life and promotes independence for Londoners with a visual impairment. We provide individualised practical and emotional support to reduce the social isolation that many people living with a visual impairment can experience.
About This Cause
BlindAid is London's oldest sight loss charity. We offer support for a particularly hidden group of beneficiaries - isolated, blind and visually impaired people. Our free services focus on improving wellbeing, confidence and expanding social networks. Our core outreach service is our Sight Support Service - this unique and vital service currently offers support for around 100 isolated blind and visually impaired people a year in Islington. Most of our beneficiaries are 60+, living on benefits/low income and have limited to no digital skills. Beneficiaries are predominantly experiencing low mood when first referred, and low levels of self-confidence/independence are common. The Sight Support Service offers both emotional and practical support for beneficiaries. It is free and available for as long as there continues to be an identified need. Providing sensitive, consistent, and reliable support for isolated, vulnerable beneficiaries allows us to establish vital professional relationships of trust with each individual. This service is delivered via our Sight Support Workers - paid, trained and carefully recruited members of staff - who can offer support via telephone or by visiting beneficiaries in their homes, sheltered accommodation or residential/nursing homes. We also run a Community Project in Camden (which Islington residents are eligible to attend), offering beneficiaries 16 week courses in IT, cooking and healthy eating, yoga, art and creative writing. Our Share London service matches beneficiaries who would like to get out and experience events, activities and amenities in the local community with a volunteer who can help to both guide and share experiences with beneficiaries. We also offer a grants programme - providing items that support independent living (e.g. white goods, beds, computers etc) to beneficiaries who would otherwise not be able to afford them.
