Mission Statement

At Penny Brohn UK, we know that cancer affects every part of your life. Having a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming but there are many small things that can make a big difference to the way you cope - before, during and after treatment. Things like learning how to eat well, stay physically active and manage stress. These can all help with the side effects of treatment, boost your energy levels and give you back some control. We help you look at every aspect of your life, offering practical help and emotional support to find out what you need to strengthen your body’s natural ability to heal. Our services are provided free of charge to anyone aged 18 and over with a cancer diagnosis or in a close supporting role. We run residential courses and events at our National Centre near Bristol and Living Well services at regional locations across the UK to help you at any stage of illness and even if you’re cancer free.

About This Cause

The charity was formed in 1980, originally named The Bristol Cancer Help Centre. It was set up by two inspirational women Penny Brohn and Pat Pilkington who set out to change the face of cancer care. At the time their pioneering approach was considered at the fringes of medicine. Today, the science behind our whole person approach to cancer is widely acknowledged and supported by cancer experts throughout the world. With over 35 years’ experience of supporting people with cancer our Bristol Whole Life Approach is a framework that offers a holistic view of health and wellbeing. It acknowledges that there is more to our health than just what happens in our physical bodies and that people with cancer need so much more than just medicine. We are made up of mind, body, spirit and emotions that are interconnected and in various states of balance. We also have immune systems that are hard wired to heal given the right set of circumstances. Our Bristol Whole Life Approach supports each aspect of our being and works to boost the immune system to promote resilience. Our vision is to offer our life changing approach to anybody affected by cancer and their supporters. We believe that there are a number of sometimes small but significant things that people can do to improve their quality of life and to live as long as possible with the impacts of cancer. The emphasis is on self-care and taking back some control of your own health and wellbeing, on living vibrantly rather than just surviving. The reality is that many more people are living with cancer than ever before so the challenge, for many, is how to live well with the impacts of cancer (treatment side effects, reduced energy, and financial constraints). Penny Brohn plays a vital role in providing the kind of support that is needed from the very beginning of a cancer diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.
