Mission Statement
Our mission is to offer a life-changing level of independence, confidence and companionship to deaf people by providing dogs specially trained to alert deaf adults and children to important everyday sounds and danger signals.
About This Cause
Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is the only UK charity to train dogs to alert deaf people to important sounds and danger signals that one may take for granted. These include life-saving fire and carbon monoxide alarms, the doorbell, alarm clock, text alerts and carrying messages person to person. Yet deafness is more than just hearing loss. Hearing dogs also help to relieve the stress, isolation and loneliness that deafness often brings. A deaf person is twice as likely to have depression and someone with profound deafness is five times more at risk of dementia. Hearing dogs bring visibility to an invisible, and often misunderstood, disability. They give practical support, encourage social inclusion, and provide psychological benefits. A hearing dog can make a huge and positive difference to a deaf child's life. Hearing Dogs receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of public donations. We are called daily by people needing to have the support and security a hearing dog provides, and have over 400 people being supported in the necessary 'matching' process. Our commitment extends to those waiting for a hearing dog and our current 1,100+ partnerships across the UK. We have created over 2,876 hearing dog partnerships in our time and hope that with your help we can make this 3,000 very soon. Your support will help us to reach out to the many more deaf adults and children wishing for the life-transforming changes a hearing dog can bring. Thank you for considering Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
