About This Cause

Shadwell Basin Outdoor Activity Centre is a purpose built and developed outdoor activity Centre and site. Set in its own grounds with access to flat water and the River Thames for more advanced activities it is a little haven among nearby social deprivation. Its main emphasis in on youth programmes with schools and adult clubs also using the site. The Centre offers; kayaking, open canoeing, sailing, rowing, stand up paddle boarding, bell-boating, improvised raft building, dragon boating, rock climbing, high ropes, orienteering, mountain biking and mountain walking. These activities are used as a vehicle for exploring communication, leadership, and problem solving as well as addressing values of; respect, equality, humility, and friendship. There is a focus on decreasing isolation and increasing confidence. The youth programme has its own internal curriculum, ‘pathways’. This engages around 250 young people on long term programmes throughout the year, with around 90 young people catered for each week in sessions. The approach used is experiential learning with sustainable pathways to employment available. In addition to sessions there are day trips to wilderness areas as well as overnight residentials and camps. Participants have the opportunity to take part in National Schemes e.g. Duke of Edinburgh Award and complete National Governing Body Certificates as well as train to become coaches after completing the leadership programme. There are additional programmes for young people with disabilities and girls. The charity is based in Tower Hamlets which is the fourth worse Borough in London for child obesity (primary age) and has the highest child inactivity (Year 1 to 11) in all of London at 67% (The London Intelligence Report October 2019). Tower Hamlets, at 55.4% also has the highest percentage of households with incomes below 60% of the national median (Loughborough University 2018-19). Grants, fundraising and donations result in the activities being subsidised by at least 80% for young people giving important access to youth sporting activities and services to the most deserving.
