Mission Statement
Dorstone Playing Fields exists to provide a safe, healthy environment, where every member of the community, regardless of age, ability or background can enjoy leisure time together.
About This Cause
In 1983 a group of local residents and farmers came together to purchase 5 acres of unused land to create a shared community space for sporting and leisure activities. The land was converted from its previous agricultural use to create a football pitch, a cricket pitch and a bowling green. A pavilion and changing facilities were built from charitable donations to make the space more attractive and usable by local community sports teams. With a change in the demographic of the community, the Dorstone Playing Fields charity has begun to further utilise the space to reflect the needs of the community and beyond. A children's play area has been installed, and the venue now regularly supports educational and youth groups as a base to explore local historic sites. There is now a regular relationship with Manchester University who use the venue as a base for their annual archaeological studies of local sites as part of their history offerings. This year, in order to raise funds for future plans, the location will provide the setting for a small local music festival, promoting a diverse range of small local groups from across the generations. A small section of the venue is also being converted to create a living meadow contemplation area, planted with bio-diverse local species to create a sustainable green space for the community.
