Mission Statement
HOME IS A HUMAN RIGHT. We exist to defend the right to a safe home in Wales and fight the devastating impact the housing emergency has on people and society. We help thousands of people each year across Wales who are affected by the housing emergency by offering free, confidential and independent advice. When necessary we constructively challenge on behalf of people to ensure they are properly assisted and to improve practice and learning. We work with people who use our services as equals. We support 18,000 people a year in housing need, including over 5,000 dependent children. Home is everything. Please help us protect it.
About This Cause
1 in 4 people in Wales are living in fear that they will lose their home in the next 12 months. We provide free advice and support to individuals and families who are either living in poor housing, or are facing/experiencing homelessness. Regardless of age, background, circumstance or employment status, homelessness does not discriminate – 12% of those we currently help are under the age of 25. As more households become financially impacted by the cost of living crisis, more people are living hand to mouth and the demand for our services continues to grow. Our frontline support services provide housing, debt and legal advice across all 22 local authorities in Wales to enable people to find – or keep – a home. This is delivered in various ways: • over the phone through our national helpline, Shelter Cymru Live • email advice/ webchat • in person - at advice surgeries and community venues • at court to those who need legal advice and representation to keep their home • through our outreach work, including our street-based rough sleeper advisers and our Prison Linc service.
