Mission Statement
Based in Kings Heath and Moseley, Birmingham Kinmos is a charity committed to the social inclusion of those with a history of mental health issues. Our Aim is to support kinmos members in the community, enabling them to self-manage their lives throughout their illness and recovery. Many of our members can feel cut off from society, which leads to increased depression and anxiety: We offer a hand of friendship, social connection and support. Kinmos is a stepping stone for members enabling them to become a valued member in their local community. We do this by providing activities such as cooking, arts and crafts, Community walks in the local parks, Community lunches and coffees in the area and regular sessions in the Local Church hall.
About This Cause
In December 1979 the doors of the old Doctors House, No 1 High Street, Kings Heath opened to welcome its first visitors to a drop in centre founded by voluntary community members. It had already become clear that plans for community care were not matched by community provisions and a place was desperately needed in Kings Heath and Moseley where warmth, refreshment, recreation and above all friendship could be found. A few months later the Kinmos Volunteer Group was registered as a charity and by July 1980 it’s first full time paid organiser had been appointed. At this time Kinmos shared the building with a team from social services but as news spread the number of service users increased and it soon became apparent that more space and staff were needed to accomodate the demand. The social services team was first reduced in size and then moved to other accommodation enabling Kinmos to expand and by the end of 1988 Kinmos had secured two full time paid assistants to work alongside the organiser and volunteers in the running of the centre, it was registered as a company and Kinmos Volunteer Group Limited was born. None of this would have been possible without the committee members giving their time and energy to establish and develop the project along with the support and generosity of a great number of people from the local community, the churches, schools, businesses, individuals and the grant making authorities; enabling Kinmos to pay salaries and running costs and providing equipment, gifts, food and funding for parties and outings. The need remains. With so much support from the locality and beyond, Kinmos will continue to strive to provide a haven where all who visit can find relaxation, support, friendship and respect. From September 2016 Kinmos has moved into the community. Due to a reduction in funding we were no longer able to afford 1 High Street, a house we had resided in for 37 years, we also had to reduce the staffing levels. We now work out of Cambridge Road Methodist Church, All Saints Cafe, The Elizabeth of York and The Station Pub and rely on the support of Volunteers as we have had to reduce our staff team dramatically due to funding cuts. These venues are subject to change. We offer/provide members: Community based activities enabling members to self-manage their lives throughout their illness and recovery •Social connection enabling members to become a valued part of their local community. •A programme of events for the users to take part in- each of which help to rebuild skills, Independence and confidence and reduce any sense of social isolation; •Advocacy help for financial matters, welfare and benefits; •Advice on everyday issues impacting on service users’ lives; •Signposting services to third parties and other key professionals; •An accessible open door policy to all and one to one sessions where required; •Monthly service user forums empowering individuals to control the services we provide and encourage service users to effectively voice their views and opinions; •One to one support and encouragement focusing on good mental and physical health and well-being; •An early intervention strategy to delay the need for support from other statutory bodies by closely monitoring service users’ triggers and detecting early warning signs of deterioration in their mental health and •Support to carers and families.
