Mission Statement
Vision Statement: Pecan is a Christian organisation with the vision of… ‘Transforming Lives, through Kindness, Belief, Hope’ Mission Statement: ‘Enabling people to believe in their potential.’
About This Cause
Pecan: Pecan exists to see an end to poverty in all its forms: we were created to address the most pressing needs faced by our community, but poverty is nuanced and complicated and the pressing needs expressed through the need for foodbanks, while important, is a symptom of the root causes (low income, debt, unemployment, poor mental and/or physical health, social isolation, loneliness, stigma, discrimination, lack of choice, poor housing etc.). Pecan aims to alleviate some of the symptoms so that people can survive while working holistically on the deeper issues so that people can thrive. We do this through combining our services to provide holistic support, tailored to each person coming to us. Southwark Foodbank: provides emergency food packages to people in crisis: each package contains three days’ worth of food. We provide additional support, working with clients to find solutions to some of the issues that brought them to the Foodbank such as debt, not accessing benefits they are entitled to, extra expenses such as a broken cooker etc. through our special advisors. We also refer clients to our other services for further support. Peckham Pantry: provides a dignified, long-term way to shop affordably. Our shop is open to all, members pay £4.50 per shop for c£15-30 worth of shopping they choose themselves. We work hard to provide healthy, nutritious food, that is culturally appropriate and affordable. As well as food we provide some social space, engagement opportunities and healthy recipe cards. Employment Support: our longest running programme supports people back into work at a pace that suits them, supporting them to feel ready both with skills and knowledge as well as mentally ready to take the next step. We are currently supporting families and unpaid carers (through a Southwark Works contract). Together at Pecan: provides a range of community and life skills activities in a relaxed environment supporting people learn new skills, understand their rights, and make new social circles. This includes a free café, cultural trips, creative writing classes, crafts etc. support to fill in online forms and Techie Tea Parties for example. We signpost into other Pecan services and partner organisations to ensure all needs are met. Southwark & Lewisham Women’s Service: provides a gender specific, trauma-informed services to women who have had contact with the criminal justice system and/or face multiple disadvantage in the community. These women face many of the same barriers as those coming to us through our other services but due to their history, trauma and circumstances require a gender-specific support service. Your Donations By sponsoring our runners and donating to Pecan, you help us to provide year-round support to our community through consistent and quality services. The money raised will support us with the following: • £15 could provide an emergency food parcel with enough food for 3 days. • £30 could enable someone to benefit from a one-to-one employment preparation session, supporting them out of poverty through earning an income. • £40 could help a woman receive one-to-one support from one of our Advocates, enabling her to address her needs. • £55 could run a café session in Together, supporting those who are lonely and socially isolated to better mental wellbeing. • £100 could stock our Pantry shelves with healthy, nutritious, culturally appropriate food.
