Mission Statement
Headway Thames Valley is the only charity in Berkshire and South Oxfordshire working to improve life after brain injury. We provide early intervention and long term support, services and information to brain injury survivors, their families and carers.
About This Cause
Brain injuries do not discriminate – they can happen to people of all ages, from all walks of life and in a variety of situations. Around 4,000 people have some form of acquired brain injury in the Thames Valley each year. There are many possible causes, including a road accident, sports injury, tumour, stroke, cardiac arrest, complications during operations and post viral infections such as meningitis. Due to advances in medical technology, survivors of serious brain injury are a growing population. Evidence shows that in the last 10 years, annual hospital admissions for acquired brain injury have increased by 10% - this makes brain injury the fastest growing disability in the UK. Every 90 seconds someone is admitted to hospital with a brain injury. A brain injury is a long term health condition. Brain injury challenges every aspect of your life – walking, talking, thinking and feeling. It can mean losing both the life you once lived and the person you once were. It also has a devastating impact on family. Whilst some people may be left with physical disabilities, for others it may be a ‘hidden disability’, with people appearing to have made a good physical recovery but still struggling with many aspects of daily life such as: • difficulty concentrating • poor memory • personality changes • impaired ability to process information • difficulty managing energy levels and controlling chronic fatigue • increased anxiety • problems regulating and managing emotion Through a combination of re-ablement programmes and support services, we work to help people regain a degree of independence so that they can live fulfilled lives. We work with between 100 and 140 adults every year helping them adjust to and cope with their altered circumstances through our services. Our services include the following: • One to one support either face to face or by telephone providing advice and counselling to people who may need initial information or signposting to other services. • Around 35 to 40 people each week access our Rehabilitation and Activity Centre in Henley, taking part in activities which include art and music therapy, enablement, cognitive rehabilitation, community based activities, neuro-psychology and occupational therapy. • Our Outreach and Enablement Groups reach over 70 people per year in the Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell and Newbury areas, providing support including psychology, occupational therapy, clinical support, enablement and well-being.
