Mission Statement
Priceless people, ageless opportunities. To fight loneliness and isolation and to offer happiness and fulfilment by providing the best care with a difference. Supporting and Empowering Older People to Live Life to the Full.
About This Cause
LifeCare is an Edinburgh-based charity that has supported vulnerable older people in our community for more than 75 years. We have a proud and happy heritage and are driven by the same purpose, passion and progressive spirit as the day we began. Our purpose is to reduce social isolation amongst those who are over the age of 50 who have dementia, poor mobility or ill health. We want to provide opportunities that fight loneliness and offer happiness and fulfilment to vulnerable older people, as well as those who care for them. Our aim is to help them maintain their independence at home and in the community, while being treated with care, dignity and respect. • Centre-Based Day Care Services: LifeCare are the biggest provider of Day Clubs in Edinburgh for older people who are frail or have received a diagnosis of dementia. We offer 176 places in our 3 day care centres which are open 50 weeks of the year. Day Clubs provide stimulating activities, entertainment, companionship and a healthy 2-course lunch to those who otherwise would be house-bound or socially isolated. All of our activities are chosen by our member’s and may include baking, gardening, board games, quizzes, sing-alongs and outings, while their carers enjoy a well-deserved break. • Help at Home: Home care services are offered to people who are finding it difficult to manage life at home but who wish to remain independent for as long as possible. Each year we support around 270 people with dementia, poor mobility or ill health, as well as their carers. We help with cleaning, shopping, laundry, cooking, picking up prescriptions, and any other household tasks and errands. • Outreach: Monthly, our outreach service supports around 80 people who are older, frail or have dementia and are still living at home. Sharing a cup of tea, playing scrabble or taking a trip to the beach or a gallery can make a huge difference to our client’s everyday lives. We also provide practical assistance with welfare needs such as attending a dental or hospital appointment. • LifeCare is the lead partner in an award-winning charitable collaboration project with The Broomhouse Centre called Vintage Vibes, which provides a fresh approach to tackling social isolation and loneliness amongst the over-60s living in Edinburgh. We offer companionship with locally based volunteers and provide support which is personalised to the needs of the individual and helps them to become integrated with their local communities.
