Mission Statement

The Scottish Seabird Centre is a conservation and education charity dedicated to inspiring and educating people about the Scottish marine environment, motivating them to care for it and supporting conservation efforts to protect it. The stunning location of our North Berwick Centre gives us unparalleled access to the seas, coasts and beaches. The surrounding waters and islands are of international importance for their habitats and wildlife, including the world’s largest Northern gannet colony on the Bass Rock. We are ideally placed to strive towards our vision: to help ensure Scotland’s marine environment is healthy, wildlife-rich, valued and enjoyed by current and future generations.

About This Cause

We inspire people to DIVE IN to Scotland's precious marine habitats. From a child's first experience of puffins to a magical insight into the underwater world, we bring the wonder of our seas to life. Our vision is to ensure our marine environment is healthy, wildlife-rich and enjoyed by all. We achieve this vision through charitable activities, delivered locally, via our Visitor Centre in North Berwick, and further afield, via digital and outreach. Activities include outdoor learning programmes, public science events, interactive exhibits, outreach, practical conservation, guided boat trips. Why our work is needed: Scotland’s marine environment is exceptional and diverse, with over 60% of the UK’s total sea area, over 18,000 km of coastline and over 900 islands. Our seabird populations are a barometer for the overall health of marine environments and some, like puffins and black-legged kittiwakes, are in steep decline. Our Charitable Activities and Goals: 1- Conservation – we develop, demonstrate and promote models of conservation best practice and citizen science. Goal – marine habitats and wildlife are adequately protected, recovering and resilient to pressures 2- Education – we deliver marine education programmes, science resources and events that are relevant to national education frameworks Goal – everyone has an opportunity to engage with the Scottish marine environment and access to marine educational resources 3- Community – we work in partnership with diverse communities and enhance the experience for visitors to North Berwick Goal - more local people and visitors have a positive engagement with the Centre, and its programmes, and are motivated to help conserve Scotland’s seabirds and marine environment 4- Experience – we provide a 5-star visitor experience and are a valued community resource. Learning experiences for all ages (in the Centre and via digital resources,) as well as a creative programme of events and exhibitions, engage wide audiences year-round - Goal – to develop our position as a recognised national marine education and wildlife tourism experience, that helps people make informed choices about the marine environment.
