Mission Statement

The mission of Catherine Morrill Day Nursery is to promote the young children’s total development within a safe and nurturing environment, and to support families and community.

About This Cause

CMDN began as the Portland Baby Hygiene and Child Welfare Association in 1919. We serve children ages 6 weeks through 5 years old. We were Maine's first licensed child care center in 1967 and have maintained NAEYC Accreditation since the 1990s. We prioritize low to moderate income families striving for 51% of the families served. CMDN serves diverse ethnic groups, family compositions, primary languages, religions, and abilities. Our program serves refugee and immigrant families, single parent households, same-gender parents, teen parents, homeless families, families involved with child protective services, children with special needs, as well as parents enrolled in educational, vocational or rehabilitation services. We collaborate with Portland Schools as a partner site for one of their public pre-k classrooms. We provide the wrap-around childcare for those children whose families need extended hours of care. By providing dependable, quality childcare for all our families, they can focus on work, school, volunteering and participating in required social services and programs.
