Mission Statement
The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland nurtures the relationship between people and pets to advance animal welfare and to improve the quality of life in our community.
About This Cause
OUR MISSION The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) provides temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned, confiscated and relinquished animals, and places as many as possible into responsible and caring homes. We create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals, and seek to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering. The ARLGP makes end-of-life decisions based on safety and animal welfare considerations. OUR COMMITMENT Each year the ARLGP sees over 5,000 animals walk through our doors. We are committed to providing the best possible care for these pets by ensuring they receive the love, dignity, respect and medical attention they deserve. Each animal is given the time it needs to find a home regardless of its age, color, or medical condition until it is reunited with its family or adopted into a loving and responsible home. OUR STORY Founded by Governor Percival Baxter in 1911, the Animal Refuge League operates out of a new, modern shelter in Westbrook, Maine. Our five-year community-centered capital campaign allowed us to move into our new facility in November of 2016. With fully updated medical suites, capacity for transporting pets from other states, and spacious and bright enclosures for cats, dogs, rabbits, and small animals the ARLGP is changing the face of sheltering in Maine. We partner with rescue groups and assist overcrowded shelters in Maine, Florida, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Georgia, Virginia, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, the Bahamas and beyond. The ARLGP is an open-admission shelter and we welcome pets of all ages and those with long-term medical issues, and help give them a quality life through fostering and adoption.
