About This Cause
Chewonki is an environmental education organization based in Wiscasset, Maine. Chewonki programs include the Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki, Camp Chewonki for Boys, Camp Chewonki for Girls, Camp Chewonki Wilderness Trips, Outdoor Classroom for Schools, and Traveling Natural History Programs. Chewonki began in 1915 as a camp for boys but has grown to include summer programming for boys, girls, and coed wilderness trips for teens; Maine Coast Semester for outstanding high-school juniors; traveling natural history programs that our science educators and non-releasable animal ambassadors take to libraries, schools, and other community venues; an outdoor classroom for visiting school groups; and backcountry trips for teens, adults, and families. Through its educational initiatives, Chewonki demonstrates and teaches the importance of living sustainably. Each year Chewonki touch the lives of nearly 20,000 people of all ages in programs that range from one hour to one semester in duration. CHEWONKI'S CORE PROGRAMS Maine Coast Semester —A challenging academic program for high school juniors (and, occasionally, high school seniors). Camp Chewonki for Boys—A traditional boys camp that encourages personal growth, teamwork, and an appreciation for the natural world. Camp Chewonki for Girls -- A traditional girls camp that provides opportunities for girls to become skilled at wilderness and backcountry travel. Wilderness Trips For Teens—A wide variety of coed wilderness trips and workshops for teens. Wilderness Vacations for Adults and Families -- Big Eddy Campground, Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Camps, and Guided Adventures for people of all ages. Outdoor Classroom for Schools—Overnight, wilderness trip, and day programs for schools. Traveling Natural History Programs—Live presentations that explore the incredible diversity and complexity of the world around us.
