About This Cause

Hope Association has a long honorable history in our community. It was organized by parents in 1956. In 1957, a group of parents and interested citizens who were aware of the needs of children with intellectual and related disabilities opened a class at the Rumford Mechanics Institute consisting of one room and taught by volunteers. Committed to educating their children with special needs, these parents and citizens built the Hope Training School in 1963. The association acquired fourteen acres of land in Rumford and built Horizons Unlimited as a residence for adults with intellectual and related disabilities in 1976. They opened a second group home, New Hope, in 1986. A third home, Fourth Street Group Home, was opened in 1990. A fourth home, Kimball Avenue, was opened in 2007. In 2018 the association acquired another residential home Keep House. The Adult Activity Center moved to its current location in what was then the Rumford Armory in 1991. The armory was purchased by the association in 1996 with the strong support of the community. Hope Association has been a leader in providing quality services to people with intellectual and related disabilities. Its history has been one of family involvement, strong community support and respect for the dignity of the people we serve. Those of us who are here today continue to serve in the proud tradition of those who came before us.
