Mission Statement
Avesta Housing's mission is to improve lives and strengthen communities by promoting and providing quality affordable homes for people in need.
About This Cause
At Avesta Housing, we envision a future in which our communities thrive because everyone has a place to call home. Guided by that vision, our work has a positive impact on the individuals, families, and communities where Avesta builds and maintains safe, quality, affordable homes. Established in 1972, Avesta Housing’s mission is to improve lives and strengthen communities by promoting and providing quality affordable homes for people in need. We achieve our mission through the creation and preservation of affordable housing and support services that help residents live healthy, stable lives. Avesta is addressing the affordable housing crisis by expanding and accelerating the creation of new homes. We have 800+ units in our real estate development pipeline. Currently, Avesta owns and operates over 100 properties that provide 3,000+ homes to more than 4,700 residents. Our resident services staff connect residents to a wide array of services in food security, educational opportunity, health promotion, and social connectivity. Avesta’s 18-member board of directors is drawn from the financial, business, public-sector, social-service, and housing spheres. Members bring their extensive experience and expertise to bear in guiding our work. We have over 300 employees who share a commitment to our core values of humanity, stewardship, relationships, and quality. In response to increasing homelessness in the past decade, Avesta developed three site-based Housing First communities in Portland. Avesta also established the Homeless to Housing program that supports Avesta residents who have been or are at risk of becoming homeless. Recognizing the growing affordable housing needs of older adults in the oldest state in the country, 40% of Avesta’s apartment units are dedicated senior housing properties. Avesta also operates two assisted living facilities, 75 State Street in Portland and Inn at Village Square in Gorham. Avesta also operates a program that provides home buyer classes and free financial counseling to help renters and homeowners improve their personal financial health.
