About This Cause
For over 100 years Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in live. As the nation's largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers, "Bigs," and children, "Littles," in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bath/Brunswick has been serving youth in Brunswick, Harpswell (Cumberland County) and all of Sagadahoc County since 1981! We offer Community, School and Site-Based Mentoring Programs that serve approximately 300 youth and a comparable number of volunteer Bigs annually. 18 programs are now available at schools and site-based locations throughout our service area. Mentoring and education are the two most prominent and important factors that will lift people out of and keep them out of poverty. BBBS programs provide the professional structure to help volunteers’ best support their Littles on a path to success while bringing this support to the locations most accessible to them. Every child can be a success story and every child can fulfill his or her potential. All children need the guidance and support of caring older students and adults to ensure that this happens. It can take just one committed friend to provide the listening ear, sound advice, access to resources and in some cases the advocacy that will be the difference for a child and what their future outcomes could be. Big Brothers Big Sisters research includes the following life-changing results for our Little Brothers and Sisters: •90% of former Littles agreed that their Big made them feel better about themselves. •90% of former Littles said their relationship with their Big helped them make better choices throughout their childhood. •65% of alumni Littles agreed that their Big helped them reach a higher level of education than they thought possible. And program participants have shared the following kind words about their experiences: “Without Bill I would not have had a male influence growing up. Our children’s Bigs provide them with opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise because of our own limitations.
