Mission Statement
Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, incorporated in 1993, dedicated to enhancing health and wellness through equine-assisted services.
About This Cause
Founded in 1993, Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center is a PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International). Located just west of Portland in Windham, RTT is the state’s only year round PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center solely dedicated to serving people with disabilities through equine-assisted services. Equine-assisted services (EAS) at Riding To The Top include the entire farm experience—everything from readying one’s self (safety awareness, use of a helmet, etc.) and the horse for riding (grooming, tacking, leading the horse), to developing relationships with the instructor, horse and volunteers, to the physical and cognitive challenges of riding. EAS provides the individual with many different forms of feedback—the sensory feedback from touching a horse, the relationships of cause and effect in learning to control a horse, or the thrill of sitting astride a horse, feeling the soothing rhythm of the horse’s movements. For many who do not respond well in traditional therapy, medical or classroom settings, the time spent at the farm is frequently life changing. What we observe at the farm is substantiated by research: equine-assisted activities and therapies help to improve the health and wellness of children and adults with disabilities. By seeing, listening and doing, the brain and body connect in a unique way resulting in improvements in balance and strength; communication and social skills; and self-confidence and self-esteem.
