The Mitchell Institute’s mission is to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and attain a college education.
About This Cause
The mission of the Mitchell Institute is to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and achieve a college education. Every year, the Mitchell Institute awards a scholarship to one college-going senior from each of Maine’s public high schools. Selection is based on academic potential, community impact, and financial need. Since 1995, we have awarded more than 2,500 scholarships totaling over $13 million. The Mitchell Institute works closely with Mitchell Scholars to navigate college and the critical years that follow. Our support programs, which serve both scholars and alumni, include personal and professional development opportunities, networking, and mentoring, as well as competitive application processes for internship stipends and emergency financial assistance. Our unique approach of awarding scholarships statewide, providing personal and professional support, and conducting longitudinal research on outcomes, has proven to be a powerful combination.
