Mission Statement

The mission of Treasure House Fashions is “to promote the dignity and self-esteem of women, particularly women in transition or crisis. Outward appearance is not an accurate reflection of your worth, but it can affirm the treasure that you truly are.” We are a nonprofit quality women’s resale shop and the general public can shop there, too, and support our mission. We distribute gift certificates for our clothing through over 60 partner agencies serving women in the Greater Pittsburgh area – we're their “closet”! Their clients have the dignity of "shopping" for what they like, as well as what they need, at no cost to the individual or their agency. These agencies address various challenges. Working collaboratively, the agency can focus on their mission - we have the clothing covered! We're also open to the public and offer at least 60% OFF since the pandemic, Pay-It-Forward gift certificates are also available for those experiencing suburban poverty (61% of all poverty in Allegheny County is in the suburbs). Someone struggling to pay is told, "someone who doesn't even know you, cared enough to leave this. Your bill is paid." This generosity is often met with tears of gratitude! Clothing is our means, not our mission - our heart is to affirm the worth of women on challenging journeys. Together we make that happen!

About This Cause

Treasure House Fashions has cultivated trusted relationships with over 60 agencies throughout the Great Pittsburgh area. These agencies address diverse challenges that women face: poverty, homelessness, addiction, incarceration, single parenthood, domestic violence, trafficking, divorce, mental illness, health issues, unemployment and more. In all these situations the women need appropriate clothing to move forward in their lives. However, the underlying issue is a deeply bruised sense of self-worth! Many individuals have experienced the joy of “retail therapy” – an outfit that lifts your hopes and spirits; why not use that “magic” as a healing balm on bruised souls? We provide a specific resource of clothing in an affirming and uplifting manner. Because our store is open to the public, it eliminates the stigma that this is for the “pathetic” or “downtrodden.” Other shoppers often offer unsolicited compliments and words of encouragement to clients with gift certificates, and the shop is available as a long-term resource for clients even after they have “graduated” from their respective programs. During the past few years, we had an increased number of women who had not sought assistant previously. Now they are coming to us for help because their income was reduced or eliminated, or they are unable to navigate our current economy. At our House we don't need to choose between gas, food and clothing; we offer affordable clothing and encouragement! Treasure House has notable brand name merchandise at deep discounts in sizes 0 through 3X – casual, sportswear, business attire, sleepwear, After-Five, outerwear and accessories – everything women wear! This quality clothing is a bargain to any budget and women can feel good about their purchases – for their own benefit and for the benefit of the other women they help to support through their savvy shopping. We fuss over the details so that the entire experience reflects the worth of every woman who graces our doors. A special program at Treasure House that builds a bridge between agency clients and community members is a Sponsored Girls Night Out (GNO). This event is an exceptional after-hours shopping experience underwritten by a corporation, organization or individual. Clients receive soft mentoring through a one-on-one "personal shopper" who fusses over them, gently assists with merchandise selection and listens to their story - to the extent they are willing to share. At the end of the shopping, all participants - clients and "personal shoppers" retire to an area to enjoy refreshments and hear an inspirational talk. What could be more bonding for women than to shop, eat and chat together? Clients receive clothing and affirmation and "personal shoppers" recognize that they are not so different - they all want a better life for themselves and their families! Treasure House is currently cultivating innovative collaborations with several nonprofits to develop workshops and curriculum programs to address workforce development. In our 20-year history, Treasure House has touched the lives of over 50,000 women and even in 2023 we gave away over approximately $538,000 worth of clothing (calculated at our deeply discounted prices, not actual clothing value). More importantly, we have impacted women on challenging journeys, and it is our goal to continue to be a long-term resource to all women, particularly those in transition or crisis.
