Mission Statement
Canopy plants and cares for trees where people need them the most. Our mission is to grow urban tree canopy in Midpeninsula communities for the benefit of all.
About This Cause
"Healthy Trees, Healthy Communities" Healthy trees provide essential benefits to every city—from improved air and water quality to protection from extreme heat and storms. The mere presence of trees can reduce stress and enhance mental health. Many communities on the Midpeninsula lack a thriving urban forest, and many more whose urban trees are declining due to drought, extreme weather events, or lack of planning. For over 25 years, Canopy has been at the forefront of tree advocacy and equity on the Midpeninsula, unlocking the power of trees to foster health and equity, build community, empower youth, and fortify our cities from climate change. Canopy’s community-based programs include: -Tree Planting: expanding our urban forest, focusing on areas with low tree canopy cover -Tree Care: tending our young and mature community trees -Youth Engagement and School Programs: Inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. -Urban Forest Advocacy: Partnering with public and private agencies to grow resilient urban forests and champion healthy, nature-filled neighborhoods Workforce Development: employing and educating the next generation of the green workforce. -Tree Walks: inspiring people of all ages to explore and appreciate the urban forest -Events and Workshops: Engaging the community and sharing the latest in arboriculture science. -Community Forestry School: Equipping residents as stewards and advocates of nature in their own neighborhoods and communities -Community Services: Providing guidance, advice and support for emerging and robust municipal programs, and mentoring other organizations. Why Canopy? Healthy, resilient communities depend on healthy trees. Trees are the leading nature based solution to addressing climate change and improving community health. -Trees mitigate climate change: Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and providing us with oxygen. -Trees build community: Trees improve neighborhood walkability and community connectedness for both people and the wildlife. -Trees filter water & reduce flooding: Tree roots filter and control stormwater, reducing the risk of flooding and stormwater runoff. -Trees increase shade & cool neighborhoods: Tree temperatures under a robust tree canopy can be 25 degrees cooler, providing cost benefits and reducing the dangerous heat island effect. -Trees improve physical & mental health: Urban greenery slows heartbeats, lowers blood pressure, and improves cardiovascular health. -Trees purify our air: Leaves filter pollutants from the air, reducing asthma and improving conditions for the entire ecosystem of our communities. Give today to bring more trees and tree benefits to our most under-resourced communities!
