About This Cause
Maryland Community Health Initiatives Inc., known to most as simply “Penn North”, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has been delivering essential behavioral health, wellness, and recovery services in the heart of West Baltimore since 1993. Our mission is: to help individuals and communities overcome substance abuse, poverty, homelessness, crime, and health inequalities. Penn North began as a pioneering initiative of Tai Sophia Institute (now MD University of Integrative Health), under the leadership of Robert M. Duggan. It was among the first programs in the United States to use acupuncture in the treatment of addiction — starting the first Acudetox program in the Baltimore City Detention Center in 1993. In 2005, with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems, and a number of local foundations, Penn North became the first peer-led community recovery organization in Baltimore City to provide free on-demand recovery support services 24-hours a day through the Threshold to Recovery program. Today, a diverse staff of 85 provide a full array of behavioral health, wellness, and recovery services, including Ambulatory Withdrawal Management, Partial Hospitalization (2.5), Intensive Outpatient (2.1), Outpatient (1.0), High Intensity Residential (3.3-3.5), Low Intensity Residential (3.1), Supportive Housing, Holistic Services, and a peer-led Wellness and Recovery Center.
