Mission Statement
To improve the health of the community by providing free medical care to the uninsured.
About This Cause
WBFMC operates by appointment only to provide care for both acute and chronic health conditions. Currently, an adult medical clinic is open one night a week and a women’s clinic for gynecologic concerns is open once a month. In addition to diagnosis and treatment of health conditions, WBFMC focuses on providing face-to-face and printed information to support the patient in resolving or mitigating health issues as well as in adopting a healthier lifestyle. Since as many as 32% of our patients identify themselves as Hispanic, this information is provided in both English and Spanish, with the availability through a special contracted service of providing information in other languages preferred by our patients. WBFMC works with Tower Health (formerly Reading Health System), the area’s leading healthcare network, to provide radiologic and laboratory screenings, as well as to refer patients for specialized services on a sliding-fee scale. WBFMC also maintains a relationship with a local pharmacy to provide the first prescription for new medications at the pharmacy’s cost, through the Clinic’s funds, at no cost to the patient. Populations Served Although based in and named for its location, Western Berks Free Medical Clinic accepts all uninsured patients aged 18 and older from throughout Berks County and adjacent counties. Other Service Providers in Community Berks County has two major healthcare systems, each with its own hospital, medical staff, outpatient sliding-fee clinics, and network of primary care practices, laboratory and radiology satellites, surgery centers, and other outpatient facilities. There are also two inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, a for-profit surgical center, and a federally qualified health center with four inner city locations. Each of the above have admirable charitable care policies and well-deserved reputations for providing compassionate care. However, unlike WBFMC, they use financial data to determine eligibility for low or no cost care, and often have long waiting times to access general and specialty services.
