Mission Statement
The mission of York County Community Action Corporation is to alleviate the effects of poverty, attack its underlying causes, and to promote the dignity and self-sufficiency of the people of York County, Maine.
About This Cause
Since 1965 York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC) has provided an array of resources and services that promote economic opportunity and social equity for vulnerable citizens of York County. YCCAC’s approach reflects our belief that communities will only truly thrive when each person is provided with the opportunity to achieve social and economic well-being and have good health. YCCAC provides Head Start and Early Head Start, WIC nutrition and education, housing counseling, foreclosure prevention, fuel assistance, weatherization, outreach and social work, financial education, and transportation. We also operate a federally-qualified health center providing medical, dental, and behavioral health care. YCCAC has grown from administering a single Federal grant of $35,000 to a $30 million organization with diverse funding streams and 250 employees. Our initiatives are successful because they are mission-driven. We know the unmet needs because we live and work here. We use technology, strategic planning, and creative thinking to enhance our services and stay current. We are attentive to community trends without compromising the fundamental resources and services that are absolutely integral to York County’s safety net. As York County’s only Community Action Agency, and operating the county’s only federally-qualified health center, the work of YCCAC is critical to the health, wellness, and economic stability of many of the area’s most vulnerable residents. Programs like Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Head Start support the nutrition and health of children from birth through age five, and engage parents in their child’s development. WIC provided benefits to 3,591 women, infants, and children in 2023. Head Start/Early Head Start offer comprehensive birth-to-five early childhood education to low-income children at 14 classrooms throughout the county.
