About This Cause

Vaughan Community Services Dr. Clarence Vaughan, 1897 graduate of Harvard University School of Dentistry, after a career as Professor of Harvard Dental School and Oral Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital retired to North Conway and our story begins. Dr. Vaughan was active in the Mount Washington Valley and upon his death in 1964, left funds to provide for the poor and needy and to assist in the education of ‘worthy children’. Funds were held by the Deacon’s Fund of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, United Church of Christ, of which Dr. Vaughan was a deacon. Vaughan Community Health Services was established and in 1968 was granted an independent 501(c)(3) allowing for State and Federal grants, and for donations from the community. Immunizations, well-baby clinics and other services were made depending on available personnel and number of children at the clinic. Equipment including playpens, vaporizers and highchairs were made available. Adult health screenings, family planning and new mother classes were held on site. Referrals were made to area doctors. Health screenings revealed the need for food education and assistance with groceries and the Food Pantry opened to provide emergency provisions and Vaughan held sewing, food preparation and nutrition classes. Several community service groups, now well established and operating independently, began their organization under the auspices of Vaughan including Carroll County Mental Health and White Mountain Community Health (formerly Children’s Health Center). In 1972 the need for quality childcare and pre-school for working families became apparent and the North Conway Daycare, (now Vaughan Learning Center), was formally established. Th e Reverence for Life Building was planned and with major financial support from Mrs. Harvey Dow Gibson, built and dedicated on August 30, 1972.
