Mission Statement
The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) was founded in 1979 to conserve the natural heritage of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Our conservation and stewardship work preserves community character, conserves critical wildlife habitat and diverse ecosystems, protects natural landmarks and scenic landscapes, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities for people of all ages.
About This Cause
The inherent character of the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire has inspired generations of year-round residents and summer visitors alike. Our lakes, forests, and mountains are special places; we value the time we spend here, and we hope that future generations will be able to enjoy the same qualities of the landscape that bring inspiration and comfort to us. Breathtaking views from mountain summits and ridgelines, clear waters of our lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams, scenic lands around picturesque villages, and the call of loons heard across the water in the evening — all remind us of how fortunate we are to be part of a landscape that surrounds us with beauty in every season of the year. The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) was founded in 1979 to preserve these special places — by saving scenic landscapes and precious wildlife habitats, by conserving mountain summits and undeveloped shorelines and other places, by providing recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, and by protecting the character of a rural region that lies just a few hours away from the great metropolitan areas of the Northeast. LRCT is dedicated to the permanent conservation, stewardship, and respectful use of lands that define the character of the Lakes Region and its quality of life. In pursuit of its mission, LRCT works to acquire ownership of, or conservation easements on, properties with significant conservation value and stewards these lands to ensure their protection in perpetuity. LRCT also works, where feasible, to assist other organizations in the region that are engaged in their own land conservation activities. Since its founding, LRCT has conserved over 28,000 acres of land throughout the region. LRCT believes that its work helps to preserve the qualities that make the Lakes Region a desirable place in which to live, work, recreate, and own property, and that through the acquisition of land and conservation easements and the faithful stewardship of protected land, a land trust can have a profoundly beneficial effect on the landscape of its region, on wildlife and clean water resources, and on the well-being of the people who work, grow, and sojourn on the land they love. We believe that the work we do today has great value for the present and leaves an extraordinary legacy for future generations. LRCT is governed by a volunteer board of trustees and has four full-time staff members. LRCT’s success is built on the work of its board and staff members, as well as on the dedication and service of over 250 volunteers who contribute thousands of hours annually to the organization and its conserved properties, and on the generosity of landowners and donors who work closely with LRCT to ensure the conservation and stewardship of some of the region’s most significant lands.
