Mission Statement
The New Hampshire Soap Box Derby (NHSBD) is a youth education & development organization, an official licensed partner of the International Soap Box Derby® and a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
About This Cause
The NHSBD hosts opportunities for boys & girls ages 7 to 20 to build then race in gravity powered cars in side-by-side competition. The race events provides elementary, middle and high school students the opportunity to sharpen their STEM skills. Mechanical skills along with an appreciation of physics and mathematics define a winning racer. The winners of Local & Regional Races are eligible to compete in the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship in Akron, Ohio against other Local and Rally Champions. = = = Building and racing gravity powered cars has provided generations of New Hampshire youth with memorable hands-on experiences to sharpen their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills. Since 1939, the New Hampshire Soap Box Derby has held youth racing events that are open to boys and girls. We are a well-established tradition that has maintained its mission and core values for more than 77 years. In Soap Box Derby, drivers compete side by side on a gentle sloping track or street blocked from automobile traffic. In fairness, drivers race against each other twice per heat, switching lanes (timers) and performing a swap of their wheels. The overall time difference between the two finishers crossing the finish line determines the winner. Races are performed in a series of heats in a single or double elimination manner (depending on the type of event). Courses average about 800 feet in length with races often won in fractions of a second. (These are not the small pine wood derby cars that the scouts do, these are six foot long cars that kids ride in) This is a unique program in that it encourages a close parent-child relationship while building and racing the car. The construction of the gravity race car reinforces the importance of setting and completing goals while developing traits such as self-confidence, perseverance and craftsmanship. The parent-child relationship is fostered as parents teach their children the proper use of tools, conservation of energy principles and sportsmanship. The child is encouraged to do as much of the car assembly work as their level permits.
