Mission Statement
The Mission of ARENA DANCES is to make dance accessible to all through the presentation of contemporary dance, educational outreach, and community gatherings to inspire, promote dialogue and diversity.
About This Cause
ARENA DANCES is a contemporary dance company performing the work of Mathew Janczewski. This work is highly kinetic and abstract in form, giving shape to emotions, exploring the depths and the limits of what drives us as humans to connect, to break away, to survive. ARENA produces two concerts annually: one presents Founder and Artistic Director Mathew Janczewski’s original work with up to 400 audience members, and the other, CANDY BOX(CB) Dance Festival, presents the curated work of emerging to established dance artists, and provides a platform to teach, receive feedback, and experiment freely. We teach dance and composition programs in schools and after school (DanceON), host quarterly roundtable discussions (FLOORWORK) with emerging and established artists to answer questions regarding producing original work ; and support the development of dancers through Moving Practice and the Instinct Dance Intensive. ARENA launched the podcast Studio Stories: Reminiscing Twin Cities Dance History, in May of 2020. Now in it's 11th season with 130+ episodes and over 10,000+ listeners. Studio Stories shares interviews of local dance icons about the current and historical dance scene. In August 2021, ARENA opened a new space for dance in the Twin Cities - The Arena- where we will use the power of moving arts and education to build a vibrant community that is creative, connected and inclusive; offering classes from pre-natal to senior citizens for the community at large, and pre- and professional class offerings.
