About This Cause
The North Kohala Community Resource Center (NKCRC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in North Kohala. It is large in land area (133 square miles) and small in population (6,322 in 2,242 households). Our mission is to increase the number of successful community projects in North Kohala. We do this by providing training, coaching, and a fiscal umbrella to a diverse group of volunteer community project organizers. Despite a strong spirit of volunteerism here, before the Resource Center opened organizers often failed due to lack of funding, and the skills or capacity to manage large projects. NKCRC is designed based on these issues and our research with local organizers, so our program resonates with the local culture and addresses well-understood issues among volunteers. Since no model existed for this approach in Hawaii, we developed our program from scratch. It is a unique way to provide effective solutions to the needs of rural communities by building capacity.
