Mission Statement

RE·Center Race & Equity in Education is committed to building an equitable and just world where everyone has what they need to grow and thrive. We work in partnership with youth, families, schools, and communities to facilitate nurturing spaces where people can understand and challenge systemic racism and oppression. In all of our programs, we practice critical questioning, cultivate connection, and inspire action. Students are our true north. We work to create an ecosystem of empowered students supported by critically-thinking adults and safe school communities. We provide facilitated training, professional development, coaching and other supports for students, educators, parents, and community members.

About This Cause

Founded in 1992 by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, RE-Center Race & Equity in Education (formerly The Discovery Center) uses its core strengths of facilitation and partnership development to work with others to eliminate the root causes of racism and oppression in K-12 education. Programs operate on several levels to create environments and supports where change can occur. Today, RE-Center provides facilitated training and discussion for students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members on an internal, and interpersonal level, and includes the important context provided by examples of institutional, and ideological/cultural racism, which is inherent in systems, organizations, media and societal structures. Programs include: Equity Teams for Positive School Change is a new program that seeks a long-lasting effect by helping schools to modify their cultures for the benefit of all students. Student and educator teams from Hartford and East Hartford were the participants in the pilot Equity Teams this year, and the benefits will accrue to their entire school communities. EDIfy (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion training) is professional development training designed to build the capacity of educators to effectively engage students from diverse backgrounds. This training provides history, framing, power analysis, identity development, empathetic motivation and community accountability. It equips educators to center those who’ve been marginalized in their school systems. Participants explore their personal identities and their impact on the vital work of inspiring students to learn in increasingly diverse environments. We partner with schools and offer workshops to the public. Student EDIfy Workshops are also provided to support critical thinking and leadership development. Equity-Informed School Climate Assessment -(EISCA) replaces traditional school climate surveys with a robust assessment of school systems through an equity lens. School climate and racial equity correlate closely to student achievement and development. By focusing on the experiences and solutions offered by students and staff who hold marginalized identities, all students can be better served. Data is collected from students, staff, and parents via surveys, focus groups, curriculum and policy review, and ethnographic site visits. Students developed the questions for the surveys and focus groups in pre-interviews and focus groups. Outreach - Staff and Board members provide context and subject matter expertise on issues of race, systematized oppression, educational equity, diversity, and inclusion. Activities include keynote presentations and panels at conferences, written pieces, and serving on school committees and boards of directors. Key Accomplishments: RE·Center is a trusted resource in our field, in the state of Connecticut and nationally. RE·Center has been selected as an equity in education training provider by the Nellie Mae Foundation and the William C. Graustein Memorial Fund. Our work has been presented at the National Coalition on School Diversity, the Ford Foundation’s K-12 School Integration Convening, the State Education Resource Center’s Dismantling Systemic Racism conference, the State of Connecticut Alliance Districts Conference, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Beyond Desegregation: Promising Practices for Diverse and Equitable Schools conference. In addition, RE·Center staff members are frequently asked to facilitate community discussions and forums.
