Mission Statement
Alex's Team Foundation, Inc. supports the fight to cure childhood cancer by funding lifesaving research and nursing initiatives, in partnership with Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
About This Cause
The “ Alex’s Team “ Foundation, Inc. was established in June 2002 to celebrate the life of Alexandra Jane Miliotis, who lost her battle to Leukemia on March 15, 2002 at the age of 16. As a testament to her strength and courage, the organization strives to find unique ways to advance our Mission supporting childhood cancer research and nursing. With our two flagship programs, we have laid the groundwork for what we strongly believe could be a lasting impact on the search to cure childhood cancer. Research fellowships in Pediatric Oncology: Providing the opportunity for Harvard Medical School students to foster an interest in life-saving research for children with cancer, under the mentorship of Harvard physicians at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Since its inception, inspired by the guidance and leadership of Loren Walensky, Alex’s Team has given 48 medical students the chance to follow their dreams by participating in summer research by way of the Alexandra J. Miliotis Research Fellowship in Pediatric Oncology. Education and respite opportunities for nursing care staff: Alexandra’s 10 month stay at Boston Children’s Hospital, and the relationships that she and the Miliotis family cultivated with the nursing staff on the unit, inspired the Alexandra Jane Miliotis Pediatric Oncology Nursing Support Endowment. The only program of its kind, the Endowment provides nursing staff at Boston Children’s Hospital with vital resources to ensure the best possible care for children and families fighting cancer. By helping us in our fight against childhood cancer, with the same caring, courage, and commitment shown each day by Alexandra, “Alex’s Team” looks toward a cancer-free future, and the hope to give each child a chance to follow a dream.
