Mission Statement
The mission of the Green Mountain Club is to make the Vermont mountains play a larger part in the life of the people by protecting and maintaining the Long Trail System and fostering, through education, the stewardship of Vermont’s hiking trails and mountains.
About This Cause
The Green Mountain Club (GMC) was founded in 1910 to establish Vermont’s 272-mile Long Trail – the United States’ first long-distance hiking trail, which runs the length of Vermont along the spine of the Green Mountains from Massachusetts to Canada. For 103 years, the Long Trail has been free, open, and available for hikers to experience Vermont from a unique perspective – along a primitive footpath atop the state’s central crest of mountains. GMC depends upon over 1,000 volunteers working thousands of hours annually to manage and protect a trail system made up of over 500 miles of trails and 66 primitive shelters.
