Mission Statement

The Mayan League is a Maya women led organization whose purpose is to promote, preserve, and transmit the cosmovision and worldview, culture, history, and contributions of our ancestors and the values of our traditional knowledge and stewardship of the earth into solutions and actions against current threats and violations affecting our peoples, the earth, and humanity. We are committed to creating a permanent link between our contemporary world and ancestral traditions, respecting the diversity of our Nation while building a shared vision with our peoples, and working closely with other Indigenous peoples, organizations, and allies who support our beliefs and values.

About This Cause

The International Mayan League (Mayan League) is an Indigenous women-led, volunteer grassroots Maya organization located in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 1991 by Maya refugees fleeing the war and genocide in Guatemala in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Our purpose is to unite Maya people and allies in the United States (U.S.), educate on the root causes of forced migration, offer a platform to advance and protect the human rights of the Maya people, and assist in the inclusion of Maya leaders and other Indigenous peoples in decision making spaces that affect our peoples, communities, and futures; in particular, the Maya diaspora. Our program areas include: A. Maya Cosmovision. Transmit ancestral knowledge and historical memory to our peoples with a focus on children and youth. B. Human Rights and Advocacy: We have assisted Maya leaders to fully engage in human rights fora to safeguard their rights. C. Living in Harmony with Mother Earth - Environmental Protection: Through the Shareholder Advocacy Leadership Training Center, we assisted leaders and elders in Mexico and Guatemala to better understand corporations in order to effectively create and lead advocacy strategies that address one of the root causes of forced migration. D. Immigration: We join allied Indigenous leaders in the immigrant community to address the specific needs and rights of Indigenous peoples affected by immigration policies. Through Indigenous leadership development, Indigenous language revitalization, and community organizing we work with our community to better understand and defend our rights and educate the public of our existence and the challenges faced by our peoples.
