Mission Statement

Women’s Link Worldwide is an intersectional feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial, and anti-ableist human rights organization. We are a Global South-led team of 22 that works in Latin America and the Caribbean, East Africa, and Europe. Partnering with others, we strive to bring justice to women, girls, and gender-diverse people by dismantling structural barriers to their rights. Our priorities are gender and reproductive justice, especially access to safe and dignified abortion, prevention of gender-based violence, and climate and racial justice.

About This Cause

Women's Link embodies a visionary approach to advancing gender justice. Recognizing the complex web of oppressions faced by women and girls around the world, the organization employs strategic litigation, legal advocacy, and communications to challenge discriminatory laws and practices. Women’s Link incorporates a gender perspective and intersectional analysis into human rights law. Extending beyond traditional court settings, we utilize litigation and other legal procedures to fortify the human rights framework, ignite public discourse, and support social movements aimed at reshaping society and securing the rights of women, girls, and gender-diverse people. Our long-term goal is to uphold and advance the rights of women and girls to be free from gender-based violence and to uphold sexual and reproductive rights, especially access to safe abortion. Founded in 2001, Women's Link has a proven track record of achieving tangible results in its pursuit of gender justice and social transformation. Through strategic litigation and advocacy efforts, we have secured landmark victories in courts around the world, setting legal precedents and driving policy reforms. Moreover, by centering communities most impacted and sharing power, we support individuals and organizations to become effective agents of change in their communities, fostering grassroots movements for gender equality and social justice. Hence, our work brings about systemic change and has an impact on millions of women and girls in the regions where we work. Collaboration is at the heart of our approach. We work with over 60 partners, ranging from grassroots community groups to national organizations, in Latin America, East Africa, and Europe and participate in 40 regional and global coalitions. We represent individual women, girls, and gender-diverse clients, share power with community movements, and engage with powerful networks. Through these partnerships, we use the law to dismantle gender-based discrimination and ensure equitable access to justice. With each case we undertake, we alter the legal landscape, shifting the balance toward fairness, one precedent at a time. Our team of attorneys works with local partners in 3 regions with strong regional human rights bodies – East Africa, Europe, and Latin America. We carefully identify cases to respond to the needs of communities and feminist movements and support the women and girls concerned and advance their rights. Our model brings about systemic change by taking cases to land regional and international human rights standards nationally, to take a strong standard from one country and apply it in another, or to set missing standards via national litigation. Current projects representative of our ongoing work to advance the rights of women, girls, and gender-diverse people include: • Spain: Litigating the case of a woman and her daughter who are survivors of gender-based violence to address the use of the false “Parental Alienation Syndrome” in Europe. • Kenya: Advocating for the development and dissemination of a school-related gender- based violence policy and implementation guidelines to create safer learning spaces for girls in Nairobi County. • Colombia: Working with the Causa Justa coalition to ensure implementation of the 2022 decision we secured legalizing abortion until week 24, with an emphasis on access for migrant and indigenous women. • Honduras: Accompanying the indigenous women of the Río Blanco community in their pursuit of justice for the impacts of the climate crisis on their lives. • Spain: Partnering with Women on Web to litigate a case to unblock their website and increase information and access to abortion, especially for women in vulnerable situations. • Dominican Republic: Litigating the case of a pregnant 14-year-old survivor of sexual violence with a severe cognitive disability, including requesting urgent protection measures before the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights. • Cross-regional: Litigating cases on defective contraceptives provided to women and girls in Chile and Uganda, which resulted in unwanted pregnancies, and sharing experiences and lessons learned between contexts.
