Mission Statement
The LeVeen-Roach Scholarship Fund of Secession Golf Club was founded in memory of two members of Secession Golf Club, Jeffrey Earle LeVeen and Stephen Louis Roach, who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. In the belief that this horrific event should not define these wonderful men, this scholarship was born. Their love of golf, devotion to Secession and appreciation of our Lowcountry community will forever live in the LeVeen-Roach Scholarship Fund, which supports the higher education ambitions of Beaufort-area students who need only demonstrate academic potential, a connection to the game of golf and financial need to qualify.
About This Cause
As of May 6, 2020, we have just finished the “Evaluation and Award” segment of the year, and we have welcomed 20 new scholarship recipients, in addition to 37 renewal recipients. We have been in contact with every scholarship recipient who has a current cumulative GPA less than 3.0. All have responded in a positive manner, with plans, some in real detail, to improve grades and performance. We will stay in touch with those students. We are very pleased that a few of our scholars have achieved 4.0 GPA’s in their most recently-completed semester. The Scholarship Fund has made awards that will provide over $180,000 in assistance during the coming year. Our grants go directly to the institution, and are on a last-to-pay basis. There is uncertainty about what higher education will look like – and cost – in the future, particularly the upcoming semester, and our direct to institution and last-to-pay policies protect the Fund, its donors and recipients. Your contributions are going to further our scholars’ education, as planned. In reviewing this year’s applications, it’s noteworthy that this is the first year where many of the applicants weren’t yet BORN on September 11, 2001. We’ve come a long way and helped many lives in the meantime. The Fund can only provide this assistance because of the generous contributions of Secession members and a few others. YOU ARE THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND! And the Trustees and the recipients can’t thank you enough. We had a very uplifting contribution this past year. Stephen Roach Jr. got married, and he and his bride elected to forego table flowers at the wedding and contribute the money that would have been used for that to LeVeen-Roach. We recognize that contributions to any charity are more difficult and unlikely for some of you. We understand, and we appreciate your past generosity.
