About This Cause
Central Catholic High School (CCHS), Lawrence, MA is a college-preparatory school conducted by the Marist Brothers of the Schools and accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The school is located in the heart of the inner-city of Lawrence in one its poorest neighborhoods in a city with the 3rd lowest per capita income among the New England states. 80% of the city’s residents live at or below federal poverty standards. Founded in 1935 to educate the many immigrant children residing in Lawrence and its neighboring towns, Central Catholic High School has fulfilled its mission for these 78 years, placing a priority on meeting the needs of the economically disadvantaged children and families. Today, CCHS celebrates a diverse student population representing 40 cities and towns throughout the Merrimack Valley area of Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire while continuing its commitment to the region’s newest immigrant populations. Our mission statement: “Central Catholic High School mission is to make Jesus known and loved, to prepare hearts and minds for college and for life, with particular regard to the least favored. The School celebrates diversity and promotes justice and compassion in its students. Students are readied to assume their place as competent and compassionate members of the human family. Students are charged with making the world a better place. Faculty and students alike form a living community in which the dignity of each person is respected. Central Catholic demonstrates a particular regard for students who are educationally challenged and economically disadvantaged. Every student is encouraged to develop their God-given talents and use them in the service of others, particularly to the “least favored”. As a graduation requirement, all students actively participate in community service assisting those on the margins in their community, and to do so on a personal way. The Class of 2013 alone completed 13,300 hours of volunteer service to over 100 local agencies. As a college-preparatory school, CCHS provides a comprehensive and structured curriculum in the arts and sciences. Instruction emphasizes and builds on fundamental academic skills: the written and oral expression of ideas, problem solving, critical thought, and the competent use of technology. Students are prepared for 21st century university studies and for a lifetime of learning. Every student is engaged in a rigorous and highly-regarded college preparatory course of studies; 100% perform community service and 85% participate in one or more of the 58 sports and extracurricular activities offered. We are proud to report that in 2013, as has been true in the most recent decade, 99.5% of our graduates went on to higher education and accepted $14 million in scholarships for their four years in college.
