The Hospital's mission is to provide care to the sick and injured, on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, without regard to race, creed, national origin, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or ability to pay. As a community resource, the Hospital has a primary commitment to serve the residents of Attleboro, Foxboro, Mansfield, North Attleboro, Norfolk, Norton, Plainville, Seekonk, Sharon, Rehoboth, Walpole, Wrentham, and nearby Rhode Island. However, anyone who requires care will receive it, regardless of place of residence. The Hospital is committed to ensuring its trustees, officers, executives, professional staff members, employees, and volunteers comply with the letter and spirit of all applicable laws and regulations, avoid conflicts of interest, conduct hospital business with the highest degree of integrity and honesty, and always respect patient privacy and confidentiality. Sturdy will seek to provide the broadest range of diagnostic, inpatient, outpatient and emergency services appropriate for a community hospital. These will include all services except those so specialized as to be best offered in tertiary medical centers, such as open heart surgery and organ transplants. Sturdy will support and encourage its medical staff to ensure that sufficient, high quality primary and specialty physician services are available and accessible to residents of our service area. Sturdy will provide needed physician services if the medical staff is unable to meet the area's needs. The Hospital will employ competent, service-oriented clinicians, support staff, and managers, who are dedicated to delivering high quality care efficiently and with compassion. The Hospital will ensure that only competent, qualified physicians receive medical staff privileges. All staff are committed to quality by establishing and reviewing objectives as part of our continuous improvement effort and by designing systems to prevent errors from reaching patients. As a major employer, Sturdy will provide a work environment which is non- discriminatory, safe and attractive to staff. Further, the Hospital will encourage excellent staff performance and career development with appropriate financial rewards and fair employment practices. Sturdy will provide leadership while working in cooperation with public and private health organizations and regulatory agencies to promote public health and meet the health needs of residents of our service area. With regard to cost, the Hospital will work to avoid costly duplication of health care services by coordination with other area health care providers to the extent practicable. Finally, the Hospital will seek to provide its own services as cost efficiently as possible.

About This Cause

Tradition of Excellence and Philanthropy Steeped in a history of providing excellent care, Sturdy Memorial Hospital has benefitted from the generosity of members of the community since its founding in 1913. Established from a substantial bequest made through the estate of James H. and Adah S. Sturdy, over the past century, Sturdy has expanded into the outstanding health care organization it is today, propelled by diligent management, the kindness of community members, the charity of local business leaders, and the fastidious dedication of its staff. The state of affairs surrounding health care in the United States remains volatile, but our local health system of Sturdy Memorial Hospital and Sturdy Memorial Associates perseveres in their commitment to meet the health needs of our community. It is Sturdy’s top priority to maintain a strong community hospital that is unwavering in its ability to provide high quality health care locally. Challenges In an ever-changing health care environment, independence and local management make Sturdy Memorial Hospital unique. Sturdy is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art health care to members of the communities it serves while maintaining its independence. Sturdy is financially vibrant due to the meticulous management of its operations and assets, however, like all health care organizations, it faces the challenge of delivering excellent patient care during an era of diminishing resources. The majority of Sturdy’s patients are insured by Medicare and/or Medicaid and every year Sturdy receives millions less than the cost of services provided as underpayments by these government payers. Sturdy continues to reinvest financial gains back into the organization to stay contemporary and innovative, attributes that correlate to enhanced patient care. Despite financial prudence, Sturdy faces growing difficulty each year to fund programs and hospital services that are vital to the health and well-being of its patients. In its commitment to deliver the best possible medical care, Sturdy has invested over $10 million in capital improvements in 2020, and several million dollars in technological advancements to install Cerner, a new Electronic Health Record system. Sturdy is steadfast in maintaining its independent financial stability while staying committed to the population it serves. Sturdy also offers support groups, educational programs and community events to its neighbors, free of charge, to ensure that essential health information and much needed support is available to the people who need it the most. Sturdy’s commitment to the community, funded by the hospital, totals over $6 million annually, this is in addition to $6.4 million of free care provided to those that could not or would not pay for the services they received. An Enduring Impact Sturdy Memorial Hospital is proud of its legacy of efficiency in its operations. By working with area health providers to avoid duplication of services, and by maintaining strict expense controls, Sturdy plays a key role in containing health care costs. To ensure that Sturdy maintains its operational and financial independence in its second century of providing the best care possible, the continued support of and partnership with corporate and industry leaders is essential. Sturdy exists to meet the urgent, emergent and persistent health care needs of our patients. Our core values of quality care, patient safety, patient satisfaction, and efficient and cost effectiveness are the guiding principles for our physicians and support staff. Their commitment to delivering care based upon these values is embodied through a culture of ownership and their “I am Sturdy” spirit. COVID-19 As COVID-19 swept across the globe, society has been presented with unprecedented challenges. As a Community Hospital, the most significant challenge Sturdy faces is ensuring the health and safety of our community members and employees. Sturdy quickly refined its processes, increased the supply of critical personal protective equipment (PPE), and made changes to protect our patients and staff. We also increased our bed capacity by converting nonessential areas of the Hospital into overflow units and redeployed staff to aid in patient care. As testing needs increased, we adapted one of our Urgent Care Centers into a drive-thru testing site and opened an on-site testing area. For over 100 years, Sturdy has been committed to the health and safety of our community, and now, more than ever, philanthropic support is needed. Charitable support allows Sturdy to invest in the latest technology and vital resources to ensure a safe environment for care for our patients while keeping our staff safe.
