About This Cause

Sherrill House is the culmination of more than one hundred years of exceptional care. Founded as the Trinity Church Home for the Aged (Rachel Allen Memorial) in 1907, one of the first of its kind, today Sherrill House still leads the way in caring. Sherrill House cares for people who are rehabilitating from complex injuries or surgery, experiencing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, or are no longer able to live independently for other reasons. Sherrill House serves 175 long-term care patients and 850 short-term rehabilitation patients each year. Though relatively modest in size, Sherrill House performs an important role in Boston and beyond by demonstrating a standard of excellence and new approaches to care of frail elders, and by preparing professionals for leadership in the field of skilled nursing. Recognized by US News and World Report as one of the nation’s leading skilled nursing facilities, Sherrill House specializes in the care of vulnerable older adults. Sherrill House provides the largest and most sophisticated programs in the region for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Its Alzheimer's care center is now in its 30th year. Additionally, the Sherrill House rehabilitation program has become the go-to center for individuals who must regain function after complex orthopedic procedures, stroke, cardiac illness, or other serious health crises. Beyond sophisticated physical care, Sherrill House has in-depth programming to provide older adults with guidance, emotional support, regular social interaction and daily opportunities to express spirituality and creativity. These resources include: •Expressive Therapy, highlighted by Music and Art Therapy programs that are among the most advanced and extensive of its kind for older adults in long-term care. •A program that offers our residents and patients more than 3,700 hours of social/emotional support annually in partnership with volunteers from area universities, faith organizations and non-profits. •A Pastoral Care program that assists spiritual development for people of all beliefs. Services and pastoral care visits occur throughout the week, and additional worship services are held at Sherrill House in collaboration with area churches, synagogues, and mosques. As a result, all members of our community have daily opportunities for reflection and healing support. Sherrill House spiritual offerings include end-of-life care to help comfort families, friends and staff caregivers. To enhance the impact of its standard, Sherrill House is a leader in preparing individuals for skilled nursing leadership, with training programs in Administration, Music Therapy, Social work, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Its academic partners include Berklee College of Music, Boston University and its Medical School, MGH Institute of Health Professions, Boston College, Simmons College, Northeastern University, Lesley University, Salem State College and Springfield College. Sherrill House is here for you, not for profit.
