Mission Statement
BGCL’s mission is to enable all young people of Greater Lawrence, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
About This Cause
The BGCL first opened its doors to the youth of Lawrence in 1891 and has operated out of four different locations throughout Lawrence over time. Originally incorporated as the Lawrence Boys Club, the club began serving girls as equal members in 1992. The club expanded in 1993 to launch a satellite site in the Beacon Housing projects. Then in 2007, with the support of many generous donors, the BGCL opened a new facility on Water Street. For the past six years, the club has additionally partnered with the Lawrence Public Schools to provide structured enrichment activities to students during their school day. For 129 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence (BGCL) has been in the forefront of youth development in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. We are the largest provider of after-school programming in the area, attracting a membership last year of more than 4,088 youths including some of the poorest children in the state. BGCL fills the void for many by providing a safe, out-of-school place where they can learn, grow and acquire the skills they will need to become productive members of our society. BGCL’s mission is to enable all young people of Greater Lawrence, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. BGCL programming in our three focus areas of Academic Success, Character & Leadership and Healthy Lifestyles. For each of these three areas, our goals are: Academic Success. All members graduate from high school ready for college, trade school, military or employment. Character & Leadership. All members model strong character and become engaged citizens who are involved in their community. Healthy Lifestyles. All members adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy lifestyle choices and make a lifelong commitment to fitness. In addition to offering our members an extensive choice of activities delivered with best practices in youth development, we also provide something else that is vital to their future success: a staff that cares deeply about their development, and has the skills to help them realize their full potential. Every day, children are exposed to a message of hope within each activity they pursue.
