Mission Statement
Wellesley Friendly Aid Association is a community-based, non-profit organization that works to improve the well-being and quality of life of the residents of Wellesley, Massachusetts. Through our evolving range of programs and services, made available both directly and in collaboration with other organizations and agencies, we offer assistance to Wellesley individuals and families of all incomes and ages who have a variety of unmet needs. Although Wellesley has a reputation as an affluent town, reality can be quite different for some of our residents, including those living in public or affordable housing. All of our volunteers are Wellesley residents. Almost all our financial support comes from Wellesley residents, businesses and other organizations. We are neighbors helping neighbors for over 100 years.
About This Cause
Wellesley Friendly Aid works to meet the needs of Wellesley residents, offering many forms of assistance to individuals and families of all incomes and ages. Each year, we serve about 500 individuals in Wellesley. Our programs include: Financial aid for children to attend day camp and or summer educational enrichment programs. Without Camp Fund assistance it would be impossible for low income children to attend camp because their families, most of whom live at or near the poverty level, lack the necessary resources. The majority of children attend the camps run by the Wellesley Recreation Department. In 2016 we provided funding to 78 children. Emergency and hardship financial assistance. Friendly Aid offers financial support in emergency and hardship situations. Some of the assistance Friendly Aid has provided recently includes: air conditioners or mattresses for people with chronic illnesses or injuries; much needed repairs to cars so they could operate safely on the road; uncovered dental expenses in exigent circumstances; and desperately needed clothing for children in response to a request from a school social worker. Medical equipment loans. Friendly Aid lends wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs and other medical equipment to any resident at no cost. Holiday food vouchers. Friendly Aid distributes grocery gift certificates in November of each year to low income families and individuals so they can shop for and enjoy holiday meals. These are supplemented by certificates for turkeys that are donated by a local supermarket. Wellesley Helping Hands. A network of volunteers provides temporary, non-medical assistance for residents who are experiencing a crisis such recovering from surgery or an illness or dealing with a family tragedy. Assistance with applying for fuel assistance and SNAP benefits. We help low income residents who cannot afford to pay their fuel bills or who live with food insecurity to apply for government help. Cradles to Crayons distribution. As the Wellesley partner for Cradles to Crayons, we submit requests from low income families for clothing and other essentials to children through age 12 and then distribute the "kidpaks" of items for these children after they have been assembled. Support for English as a Second Language classes. We provide learning materials and classroom space to the Wellesley ESL program. Friendly Aid also hosts Friendship Circle weekly luncheons and programs for senior women in collaboration with Wellesley Service League and Sunday afternoon socials for seniors and the disabled in collaboration with the Wellesley Housing Authority. We are a community-based non-profit organization incorporated in 1909 that receives no government funds. Almost all of our financial support comes from Wellesley residents, businesses and organizations. We are neighbors helping neighbors for over 100 years.
