Mission Statement
West End House is an out of school time program that serves 1,600 youth between the ages of 7 and 24 from across the City of Boston. The West End House is an independent Boys & Girls Club that offers programs in four key areas: Academic and College Success, Leadership and Career Development, Visual and Performing Arts, and Fitness and Nutrition.
About This Cause
West End House is one of the most diverse after school program in Boston. Our young people represent over 40 countries and speak 10 different languages. WEH youth come from all parts of the city: 52% live in Allston and Brighton; 22% in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan; and the remaining 26% in other Boston neighborhoods. More than half our youth are teens, putting West End House in the top 2% of Boys & Girls Club nationwide. West End House applications indicate that 75% of members’ families earn less than $25,000 per year and more than 70% of our children receive public assistance. We maintain a low membership fee of $15 and scholarships are readily available to any who can’t afford it. West End House’s data-informed programming is delivered six days per week, and caters directly to the needs and interests of our young people. Our innovative programming encompasses four core areas: (1) Academic and College Success, (2) Leadership and Career Development, (3), Visual and Performing Arts, and (4) Fitness and Nutrition. We offer co-educational and gender-specific programming that caters to the unique interests and needs of our young people. Key program elements of our four core areas include the following: Academic and College Success We provide innovative, year-round programming designed to empower 450 youth per week from underserved communities in Boston to succeed from first grade through college completion. Our program includes daily homework completion support; literacy and STEM programs; mentoring for at-risk youth; one-on-one tutoring; and social emotional skill development. West End House provides programming for youth to get ready for, get into, and get through college, focusing on college exploration, financial aid, SAT preparation, and college persistence. Our College Success Coaches provide one-on-one and group coaching on campus and remotely for 250 alumni currently pursuing a college degree. More than 350 youth receive academic support at the West End House each week. Our Buddies program (Reading, Homework, Math) engages 200 youth and 50 volunteers 75 young people participate in STEM programs (Lego Robotics, Coding, Girls in Science) to encourage curiosity and an affinity toward science 99% of our high school seniors graduated from high school in 2017 Teens are prepared for college with programs like SAT Prep, FAFSA completion, college application assistance, and Junior and Senior Advising 96% of our high school graduates enrolled in college in Fall 2017 76% of West End House college freshmen are first generation college students Leadership and Career Development Our youth employment initiative is a unique, 10-year employment continuum is designed to address the specific needs of our youth, positioning them for success as they achieve long-term career advancement. Our four-tiered progressive employment pipeline provides programming for youth ages 14-24 to bolster career readiness skills, engage in on-site and external employment, and eventually complete career-aligned paid internships to bolster industry-specific skills in a real-world setting. West End House is one of the largest year-round teen employers in the city of Boston. West End House employed 65 teens with year-round jobs in 2017, making us one of the largest year-round employers for teens in the city of Boston Each employed teen completes 5 hours of personal development per week (academic support, arts programming, leadership development, etc.) Social/Emotional and Job Readiness skills are included in programs for all ages to develop problem solving, initiative, persistence, and relationships with peers West End House teen employees worked 25,000+ hours last year The Brian J. Honan Fellowship provides summer internships at placements like the State House, City Hall, and Boston non-profits and advocacy organizations 5 West End House alumni serve on the Success Boston Council – a group of youth convened by the Boston Foundation to inform the city wide effort toward increased college completion Visual and Performing Arts Our programs engage 400 young people weekly in the visual arts, theater, dance, and music. We provide daily, high-quality instruction that helps youth develop mastery-level skills via progressive learning. Youth learn the basics then develop higher skill levels which culminate in a finished product or performance to share with their peers. In addition, our arts classes offer experiences that foster critical thinking and non-cognitive skill development. West End House has cultivated strong partnerships with Berklee College of Music, Museum of Fine Arts, American Repertory Theater, and community arts organizations such as Boston Ballet, Young Audiences, and Elliott School. More than 400 young people engage in arts programming each week We offer 30+ intermediate or advanced art classes each week; classes include painting, drawing, ceramics, guitar, drums, vocals, film and video, modern dance, songwriting, studio recording, sound design, etc. 72% of participants demonstrated intermediate or advanced skill development in music, visual arts, dance, or theater in 2017 Partners include the Berklee College of Music, Museum of Fine Arts, Music & Youth Initiative, American Repertory Theater, Hasty Pudding, and Commonwealth Shakespeare Company. 33 young people participated in the MFA’s Community Arts Initiative (our 10th year participating) and had their work displayed in the museum last year 150 young people showcased their work through a music, dance or theater performance or a visual art exhibit in 2017 Fitness and Nutrition We provide comprehensive programming that is designed to improve the physical health and nutrition of West End House’s young people by focusing on the importance of developing lifelong, healthy lifestyle goals. These goals include increasing daily access to whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean proteins; engaging our youth in a wide range of physical activities that keep them moving for at least 60 minutes a day; and offering health and fitness activities such as girl-focused sports and fitness, cooking classes and fitness/anatomy instruction. Through the New Balance Live in Motion initiative, we provide more than 4,300 hours of health, fitness, and nutrition programming each year Sports leagues like basketball, soccer, baseball, softball and floor hockey engage more than 300 West End House youth and teach teamwork and perseverance 75% of targeted West End House youth most in need of physical fitness improved their fitness level in 2017 West End House prepares and serves more than 101,000 meals each year Each healthy meal was prepared from scratch and included whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables West End House offers 12 weekly nutrition and cooking classes Culinary training for teens includes learning how to cook from a recipe and how to be creative about healthy alternatives
